If natural wonders are on your itinerary, Alamosa is the place to be. Come and see the Great San Dunes National Park, 30 square miles of the highest dunes in North America, trail-free and just waiting for your own personal expedition to commence through not only the sand, but cottonwood groves, tundra and forest as well.
If playing in the sand is not your idea of a great vacation, come and explore the Rio Grande National Forest, home to the ancient Anasazi Indians and the Wheeler Geological Area. Raft the Rio Grande River, fish the Conejos River, or visit the Medano-zapata Ranch, the largest natural conservation area at over 100,000 acres.
If you've come to see the incredible sights, and who hasn't, take a spring or summer drive through Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic Byway, the Silver Thread Byway or the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway. Want someone else to do the driving? Take a ride on the Cumbres/Toltec Railroad and travel southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico on this 1880's era steam railroad through still-vastly untouched wild west.
No matter your passion when you come to Alamosa, Colorado, you'll find the adventure you're looking for, and the resources to plan for it, in our recreation listings.
