Creede Colorado Arts Scene

In 100 best Small Arts Towns in America (John Muir Publications: Santa Fe), John Villani identifies Creede as a place to “discover creative people, fresh air, and affordable living.” Creede supports one of the most active and energetic arts communities in the country with a variety of commercial galleries and studios plus many more exhibits sequestered among private homes. The Creede Repertory Theatre and an active arts organization are additional enhancements to Creede’s art scene.

Creede ColoradoCreede Repertory Theatre

The nationally acclaimed Creede Repertory Theatre draws nearly 20,000 theatergoers every year. Although productions vary from year to year, musicals, comedies, contemporary and classic dramas are standard repertoire. It is possible to see seven plays in four days a the height of CRT’s season. Having expanded both program and season, the CRT now continues its series of “main stage” shows and the intimate “3rd Floor Theatre” productions into autumn. Sell-out performances are common in mid- to late summer so advance reservations are strongly recommended.

The season schedule is available by contacting CRT or checking with the Creede Chamber of Commerce office. The Creede Repertory Theatre’s restoration project of the Rio Grande Hotel, built in 1892, received the Colorado Historical Society’s 2001 Stephen H. Hart Award “in recognition of an outstanding contribution to historic preservation.” Three new dormitories house theater personnel during play season. A small amphitheater is suitable for outside performances or concerts. During the off-season, the dormitories, which conform o the architectural style of the historic hotel, are available for retreats or conference.
