Granite, Colorado Mountain Activities & Recreation

Granite is deceptively quiet. Behind the sleepy facade, lays a mountain of things to do and see while here. Whitewater rafting thrives here, and just south of town you'll find some of the most challenging, technical waters on the Arkansas River. Wildlife viewing is also in boon here, as Granite is home to a herd of Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goats, both of which can be seen if one is very still, and very observant. Hunting in Granite's hills is a favorite spring and fall passtime for those with the license to do so, the hills being full of wild turkey and elk.

Granite's history is apparent as you pull into town as well. The Leadville Stage Coach ran through here for years, the path itself still preserved, still running from Leadville into Chaffee County, visible even from the highway on either side of Granite. And the history on that trail is just as wild as the west gets.

Hiking the back trails of Granite you can find yourself at Twin Lakes the back way, or challenge yourself to crest one of the many 14,000 foot mountains surrounding this valley town. Whatever it is you come to Granite for, you're sure to find the resources you need in our recreation listings.
