Many come to Monarch Pass in summer and autumn to drive the old roads, mining passes that now stem from Monarch Pass, named appropriately albeit rather uncreatively - Old Monarch Pass, and Old Old Monarch Pass. Dating back to the early 1800's to a time before Hwy 50 was carved into the mountain, these roads served as passage over the daunting peaks on the miner's way to their claims.
