Lost Lake, a high elevation lake at approximately 11,800 feet, is located south of Cottonwood Pass at the base of the Continental Divide. It is a mere one mile hike (one way) to the lake, with a trail that begins at Chaffee County Road 306.
Directions: From the traffic light in Buena Vista, travel west toward Cottonwood Pass for 18 miles. The trail is on the left and there is a small parking area on the right for about five cars. On some maps, an old 4-wheel-drive trail may be marked; the trail uses the old ruts of the road for part of the hike. This could be a good first hike for those visiting from much lower elevations who want to acquaint themselves to physical activity at such a high elevation.
Fishing and camping are very popular at Lost Lake, and of course, the mountain views are stunning in all directions, including Turner Peak (13,232 feet) to the northeast. Located above timberline, the area is also known for its lush wildflowers during the summer.
