Barbara Whipple Trail

The Barbara Whipple Trail is a popular trail in Buena Vista was named after Barbara Whipple (1920-1989), a local artist who owned an art gallery on Main Street in Buena Vista.

 

It is considered a moderate hike that offers spectacular views of the mountains to the west. It begins at the foot bridge over the Arkansas River, with a number of paths climbing and meandering up the hill to Chaffee County Road 304, which was one the railroad grade of the historic Midland Railroad. Four kiosks are situated throughout with signs providing interesting facts and history of the region.

 

More than a hiking trail, this is an area brimming with beauty that greatly promotes the “quality of life” of residents. Let the sounds of the Arkansas River flowing by enchant you, photograph the beautiful views of the Collegiate Peaks towering over the valley to the west, watch the kayakers during the summer, or simply get some exercise in while in proximity to the center of town.

 

Directions: At the traffic light, travel east on Main Street to the end. Park in the large dirt parking lot and your hike begins at the bridge over the Arkansas River.


Miscellaneous: Restrooms in the parking lot; Bicycles are permitted.
