Of course, winter and Snowmass go hand in hand. Say the village’s name and it conjures visions of waist-high powder, blue skied days and a yellow sun smiling down as you hurl yourself down Buttermilk mountain. Famed for downhill skiing and its proximity to Aspen, Snowmass also offers activities such as snowcat rides, sledding and sleigh rides for the whole family. Try your hand at dog sledding, or make the trek through the 10th Division Hut Tour. Whatever your passion when the snow flies, Snowmass has what you’re looking for.
If you’re under the impression that Snowmass is just that – massed with snow all year round, guess again.
When the snows melt and the sun warms the valley, Snowmass becomes a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Horseback riding, mountain biking, mountain boarding, kayaking and whitewater rafting join the ranks with hiking, 4 wheeling and of course frisbe golf, an event which you absolutely must try if you haven’t. Movies, music and festivals on top of your outdoor adventures will keep you on your toes in the mountains this summer. The drive alone over Independence Pass is worth the trip, sporting spectacular views and the opportunity to visit Independence, one of Colorado’s best-preserved ghost towns.
