Many people come to the St. Elmo area for not only the history, but the challenging bike trails surrounding this whole patch of wilderness. For an epic ride, take the Alpine Tunnel Trail which starts in St. Elmo, travels west to Hancock, and then up above treeline and back down to St. Elmo again. This trail is rated difficult to expert by those who ride it, but if you're after stunning valleys, a view of Tunnel Lake and some serious challenging ascension, this might be just what the doctor ordered. For those wanting something a little more tame, you can park at the Colorado Trailhead about 10 miles from St. Elmo, and bike the 10 miles uphill, enjoying historic landmarks and beautiful National Forest along the way.
