St. Elmo, Colorado Mountain Activities & Recreation

St. Elmo is a draw for a lot of tourists each year just based on the ghost town quality alone. But wait, there's more to this little forgotten town than its gun slinging history.

Here you'll find incredible hiking opportunities; Agnes Vaille Falls is here, just west of Mt. Princeton Hot Springs, as is the old railroad grade from Hancock to the now-defunct Alpine Tunnel, a fantastic hike through an old mining district including the Allie Belle Mine area. Many also bike this area from the Colorado Trail, stopping to take in the ghost towns and the incredible scenery you'll find in the Canyon.

The Tincup Pass is suitable for all vehicles in summer months and makes a great scenic drive for the whole family. Of course, Mt. Princeton Hot Springs is just up the road and has been a local's favorite spot to kick back and soak away the stresses of the day in.

Whatever it is you've come to St. Elmo for, you'll find plenty to do in the surrounding land steeped so richly in history. Including things you'd not expect - for example you can buy a bag of black seeds from the store in town and feed the chipmunks at the Chipmunk Crossing, or just sit back and watch the hummingbirds flitting around in numbers you've likely never witnessed. Take rock hounding equipment with you and scour the hills for aquamarine and quartz still embraced by the mountain. Something definately for everyone.
