Snowmobiling is one of the most popular activities in the area. There are several snowmobile clubs that groom trails for public use. Most of these trails follow railroad grades or mining roads. All of these trailheads have good parking and turnarounds. The actual locations of the trailheads vary as the snow comes to lower elevations.
From Salida follow Hwy 285 south to the Marshall pass road (Colorado 200). Follow this until the snow takes over. Unload here and enjoy riding the Marshall Pass rail line to the summit of 10,800 ft Marshall Pass. Enjoy views of Mt. Ouray, Silver Peak, and in the distance, the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
From Buena Vista, follow Cottonwood Pass Road to the obvious trailhead. Follow the groomed trail as it weaves through the trees. There are many nice side trips, but resist the temptation, and continue on to the summit of impressive Cottonwood Pass (12,100 ft). On the way back down, be sure to view Mt. Yale (some people actually ski up there!) and the spectacular Gladstone Ridge.
For a little historic trip, follow Colorado 162 west out of Nathrop. See the historic mining towns of Alpine, Iron City, and St. Elmo. (For more information on these old towns, see Ghost Towns and the Photo Album). There are still some hearty soles who live there year round, so look politely! Mount your sled at St. Elmo, and follow the main trail into the heart of Fourteener country to the mining town of Hancock. This consists mostly of old mine towers and sorting buildings. Continue on to Hancock Lake and timberline. From here, the trails range far and wide above timberline for almost endless sledding. Off trail riding here is possible on solid windpacked snow.
On the way home stop by the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs and soak out the soreness. The water is hot year round, and flows directly into the river. Enjoy the unique experience of soaking in hot water only a few feet away from icy river water!
If you do not own a machine there are several companies that run commercial trips. These can range from easy introductory rides to full on all day alpine excursions for experienced riders. Truly, this is an area to satisfy anyone.
Remember that the mountains here are real alpine terrain, and avalanches and quick fierce storms are real possibilities. Be prepared for anything! This area prides itself on good relations between snowmobilers and skiers. Be sure to slow down, smile and wave at the skiers as you pass. Everyone is out to there to have fun!
