The Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad, also known as the South Park Kenosha Pass Railroad Display
Line, was a narrow-gauge railroad company that ran from Denver, up the South Platte River to Bailey, over Kenosha Pass, across South Park and on to Gunnison and Leadville. The 10,000 foot pass required helper engines to get the train cars up. The helpers turned around on a wye (Y) and returned to their yard to await the next train.
A small railroad display explains the importance of this site. It’s on the east side of Highway 285, on the road to the campground. Interpretive signs tell about the South Park Line. A sign, rails and a switch demonstrate how the wye worked.
Kenosha Pass has beautiful views of mountain peaks and of South Park. The Colorado Trail skirts around the campground. The summit is covered by a huge grove of aspen trees.
