Nestled in Vail Valley along the I-70 corridor, Avon is conveniently located in this recreational mecca. The town received its name purportedly from the Nottingham family, early English immigrants whose new home reminded them of the Avon Valley back in England. Ute Indians were living in the area when the first white people arrived and settlers began farming and ranching in the 1880's. Tourism developed in the 1960's and '70's, leading Avon to be finally incorporated in 1978.
Nottingham Park with its large lake sits as the focus of the community, offering recreation according to the seasons. In warm months, walk, jog or bicycle in its beautiful surroundings. During the winter, play hockey or ice skate. Outside the park, relax in the splendor of the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. Enjoy any number of special town events. Visit nearby Vail and Beaver Creek for skiing, galleries and the performing arts. From shopping to Jeeping and nightlife, to golfing, rafting, and zip lining, whatever you like to do can be found in or a mere stone's throw away from this "Heart of the Valley."
