South Fork, Colorado Mountain Activities & Recreation

South Fork is home to over 900 acres of alpine lakes in St. Luis State Park, where you can enjoy swimming, boating, wind-surfing and fishing to your heart’s content. Host to 5 of the most spectacular scenic drives available, the Silver Thread Scenic Byway includes the Alpine Loop, Trail of the Ancients, Los Caminos Antiguos, San Juan Skyway and the  West Elk Loop, all spectacular when autumn covers the aspens in gold. If you don’t want to do the driving, you’ll find the Cumbers and Toltec scenic railroad winding its way through 64 miles of intense wilderness.

With wildlife refuges in both Del Norte and Alamosa, Penitente Canyon and her volcanic formations perfect for challenging rock climbing to the north, and a landscape still dotted with historic mines from the gold and silver rush, you might just have to extend your stay in South Fork to experience all it has to offer.

Being 18 miles from Wolf Creek, South Fork becomes home to skiers and snowboarders from around the globe when winter hits. One of colorado’s best kept secrets, Wolf Creek is reputed among those in love with the act of hurling themselves down a mountain slope to be the number one place to catch the most profound powder.

With 2 million acres of National Forest at your disposal, you’ll find much more to do than just hit the slopes. 250 acres of groomed snowmobile trails, 900 acres of premium ice fishing in the St. Luis State Park, winter camping, and of course the Penitente Canyon and its spectacular natural ice climbing make South Fork an adventurer’s paradise.
