Celebrating Buena Vista's Old West and mining heritage, Gold Rush Days has been a town signature event since 1950. Live music, blacksmith demonstrations, the rubber ducky race, kids train, and a variety of vendors are just some of the attractions. There's fun for all ages, as even the toilet seat races have heats divided by age groups, from young children up to the "Depends" category, with fierce competition for the coveted "golden plunger." Don't forget to visit the mountain man camp, where you can learn about the history and way of life of the Old West mountain men and listen to an endless supply of tall tales. For those over the age of 13, The Madams of Central Colorado show tastefully tells the story of a "certain" way of life, with both humor and poignancy.
Highlights of the two-day event include the burro race, complete with packs of mining equipment, and the reenactment of a gunfight at the historic Lariat Bar. Both Main Street and McPhelmy Park are the scenes of most of the events, so be sure to join the fun at both venues, just steps away from each other.
